Keynote Speakers

Federico M. Butera

Politecnico di Milano

Federico M. Butera is Professor Emeritus at the Politecnico di Milano, where he taught Environmental Technical Physics, and holds an honorary PhD in Architecture. One of the pioneers of scientific environmentalism, he has been conducting research in the fields of energy and the environment since the 1970s. He has participated in the work of the International Energy Agency on research relating to energy efficiency at building and urban scales and has coordinated European projects on these same topics; he has collaborated with the UN agency UN-Habitat on issues concerning sustainable development at building and community levels in developing countries.

Beyond the fossil era

John Harvey

University of California, Davis

John Harvey is a Professor of Civil Engineering at the University of California, Davis, where he chairs the Transportation Technology and Policy graduate group. He is also Director of the University of California Pavement Research Center (UCPRC), which conducts a wide range of pavement research for Caltrans through the Partnered Pavement Research Center program, in collaboration with UC Berkeley, Dynatest Consulting, CSIR (South Africa), and other institutions. Earlier, he was co-Principal Investigator and project manager of the Caltrans Accelerated Pavement Testing Program (1994–2000), where he led the development of mechanistic-empirical design methods and the expansion of concrete pavement testing. He pioneered research on construction productivity for long-life concrete and asphalt pavements, and its interaction with urban traffic. At UC Davis since 2002, he teaches pavement design, rehabilitation, and asphalt materials. He previously spent 13 years at UC Berkeley and four years as a consultant in Nigeria and Texas. He is a registered professional engineer in California.

Stefano Magni

Università di Milano

Stefano Magni, Ph.D., is Associate Professor of Ecology at the Department of Biosciences, University of Milan. His research activities focus on the monitoring and toxicity assessment of
(micro)plastics, water-soluble polymers, and tire particles in freshwater environments, using biomarkers and “omics” techniques. In 2017, he was a Visiting Researcher in Dr. François Gagné’s laboratory at Environment and Climate Change Canada (Montréal, Québec, Canada), supported by the Brusarosco Award from the Italian Society of Ecology, where he investigated the neurotoxicity of (micro)plastics using freshwater model organisms. He is author/co-author of more than 60 publications in international scientific journals and books.
